Some conversations need a little more room.

The Front Porch is a place to pause, reflect and perhaps see something differently.

Sometimes, though, a conversation asks us to go further.

Come in.

There are different rooms for different conversations.

Some conversations begin with a question.

Others with an opportunity, a difficult decision, an audience waiting to hear something worth saying, or simply the sense that something needs to change.

Over the years, I’ve found myself invited into many of those rooms — boardrooms, businesses, churches, conferences, coffee shops and conversations between two people trying to work out what comes next.

These days, I’m selective about the rooms I enter.

Not because the work matters less.

Because I’ve come to understand that the right work matters more.

What follows isn’t a list of services. It’s simply where some of those conversations happen.

ROOM ONE

Practice

Work that strengthens rather than consumes.

I still love business — the complexity of it, the people within it, and the moment when a difficult situation begins to become clearer.

Today, my practice is increasingly centered on thoughtful work with owners, leaders and boards: asking better questions, bringing perspective where things have become complicated, and helping build organizations capable of becoming stronger than the people who founded them. Sometimes that means advice. Sometimes coaching. Sometimes simply creating enough room for the real question to emerge.

ROOM TWO

Speaking

I’ve always loved what can happen when people gather.

A room changes when somebody tells the truth. When a familiar idea is seen differently. When a story makes something theoretical suddenly personal. When one good question follows people home.

I speak about leadership, identity, resilience, faith, business and the places where those things inevitably collide with real life.

Not because I’ve mastered them. Because I’ve lived enough of them to have something worth sharing.

ANOTHER ROOM

Not every room has a name yet

Some things are better allowed to emerge than forced into being.

There are conversations, gatherings and ideas beginning to take shape that don’t belong neatly behind either of the doors above.

For now, I’m leaving a little room for what comes next.

Perhaps there’s a conversation to be had.

You don’t need to know which room it belongs in.

Start with what’s on your mind.
