Chapter One
The Tapestry
We rarely understand the picture while we are living it.
For much of my life I have imagined standing behind a great tapestry. From that side, nothing appears to make sense. Threads cross unexpectedly. Colors seem disconnected. Knots interrupt the pattern. Some threads disappear. Others emerge without explanation. There is little order. Very little beauty. Only questions.
For years I carried a quiet hope that one day God would turn the tapestry around—not so I could admire my life, but so I could finally see what He had been weaving all along.
Looking backwards has changed the way I look forwards.
Today I no longer see isolated events. I see threads. England. Guernsey. Texas. Success. Failure. Loss. Restoration. Friendships. Businesses. Books. Maria. Kingsman. Boardrooms. Balconies. Conversations over coffee. None of them were wasted. Every one became another strand held in hands far wiser than my own.
God seems remarkably comfortable working with unfinished lives.
I once believed God would use me once everything was finally in order. Instead, He quietly worked through every unfinished season. Some of my greatest teachers were disappointments, failures and unexpected endings. The moments I would never have chosen became the threads that gave the tapestry its depth.
Every conversation carries a thread.
I no longer believe chance meetings are chance. They are simply another stitch being added. A conversation over coffee. A quiet lunch. A mentor. A friend. A question asked at precisely the right time. Most seem ordinary until years later, when we realise they quietly changed the direction of our lives.
The picture is never about us.
The finished tapestry is not the portrait of one person's achievements. It is the portrait of one faithful God. If people ever see beauty in my story, I hope they also see its true Artist. Every thread of grace, restoration, waiting and new beginning belongs to Him.
This changes everything.
It changes how I lead, build businesses, write, listen and ask questions. I no longer assume I understand the picture someone else is standing inside. Perhaps they are still looking at the back of the tapestry. My role is not to explain the whole picture, but to sit with them, notice, encourage and gently remind them that the Weaver has not walked away from His work.
The Front Porch exists because of the Tapestry.
People do not arrive because they need another expert. They come looking for hope, perspective and peace. The Front Porch is simply a place where fellow travellers gather. Some arrive carrying tangled threads. Some arrive carrying beautiful ones. Most carry both. All are welcome.
The Invitation
If your life feels more like the back of the tapestry than the front, if the threads appear tangled and you cannot yet see the pattern, take heart. The Weaver sees what we cannot.
One day the picture will be clearer.
Until then…
Take the next faithful step.
Trust the One who is still weaving.
And when you need to rest for a while…
The Front Porch will be here.
